On Sunday the 22nd August Meggetland played host to this years annual charity fundraising match between TRYumph for Teenage Cancer RFC and the Scottish Legends.
The event, now in it’s third year, is growing in stature and is doing a lot to raise funding to support teenagers with cancer and also to raise awareness of the issues teenagers have when they are diagnosed with cancer.
With the TRYumph team, made up of enthusiastic players from various clubs and aged between 18 -24, and the experienced heads of the Scottish Legends the match kicked of at 2.30 in front of a crowd of approx 300. The crowd increased during the match when the Boroughmuir minis, midis, coaches and parents stopped to lend their voices when they had completed their back field training.
After approx 10 minutes of aggressive, fast flowing and furious play, where neither side was willing to give an inch the TRYumph squad saw a gap and took the lead with an unconverted try.
Play then continued for another 6 minutes before the Scottish Legends retaliated and scored a try of their own. Unfortunately for TRYumph the try was converted resulting in the Legends leading by 7 – 5.
The first half stayed fairly consistent with both teams attacking and defending with everything they had. But the experience soon overcame enthusiasm and the Legends, whilst moving the ball around with such finesse, scoring a further 3 try’s and a conversion to a single unconverted try by TRYumph which took the half time score to TRYumph 10 – 24 Scottish Legends.
The second half was no less hectic seeing both teams running the length of the pitch to continue the try fest (11 in total). The second half saw the Legends score a further 3 try’s and 2 conversions where the lads from the TRYumph squad could only echo the same number of unconverted try’s as the first half.
Final score was - TRYumph for Teenage Cancer 20 - 45 Scottish Legends
After the final whistle the two captains, Kyle McPherson (TRYumph) and Jon Petrie (Legends) both admitted that this years match had been the most strongly contested and by far fastest match to date. And, although battered and bruised, all the players and officials agreed that it had an enjoyable afternoon and vowed to be back again next year.
The man of the match prize, this year, went to TRYumph’s No 8, Boroughmuir’s Calum Mackintosh.
Not only was Calum a major linchpin throughout the match, attacking and defending like a man possessed, but his off pitch fundraising continued to go beyond all expectations.
The weather was kind, the facilities were superb and the rugby was of a very high and competitive standard. In addition to a high tempo and entertaining game of rugby the Boroughmuir clubhouse also played host to an array of stalls to entertain the spectators and players alike. There was Tombola, Raffles, Home Baking, Hot Food, Kit stalls, Face Painting and of course the obligatory Club House Bar.
Thanks go out to all the helpers, sponsors, organisers, players and officials.
And also the spectators who came along to lend their support and cheered on the teams.
Planning for next years event will commence at the end of October and it is hoped that Boroughmuir will again support the event and that word will continue to get out so that crowd numbers continue to increase.
We are now planning the 2011 event and we are looking for Companies & Individuals to support the event by investing in Program Advertising, Shirt Advertising, Sponsorship Deals & The Supply of Raffle Prizes
